Demos

(Ordered by release date.)

Many demos are only released in 'plain files' format (elf/srec/bin). These can either be transferred to the dreamcast via serial cable/bba/lan or by making them into a self-bootable cd. This can be done using one of a variety of self-boot toolkits that are available. Go to our forums to request any further help you may need.
Any discjuggler / nero images distributed may just be burnt directly to cd (using discjuggler/nero) and they should boot up without problems (or any swapping needed) on a dreamcast.
Anyone with the skills to make (and test) dj/nrg images, feel free to help out and send in any 'missing' images.

I am currently working on a collision detection and response system which should show up in the next videos..'

By: GreenGiant

Info: My own single player version of the game pong for the Sega Dreamcast. It is based on DC Land, a project by Lord Kernow and I. It has basic 2D graphics and music. It also shows a pong logo on the visual memory unit. The DPAD on the control pad moves the paddle, the X button selects in the menu.

Simple 3d Engine
Last Update: 05-Oct-2002

Stalemeat
Info: This is a 3D engine for the Sega Dreamcast, it is based on DC Land. I wrote this using all my own code for both 2D drawing functions and 3D engine code, it uses no hardware geometry functions. The wireframe object displayed is created from a 2D profile that you input first using the control pad. A volume sweep is used to transform the profile into a 3D object. Using the control pad you can translate, rotate and scale the object. You can also change the perspective and there is an option to show the object as depth sorted shaded polygons instead of a wireframe, making it look solid.

OpenGL Objectorium

Info: This is a demo I made to test the KOS OpenGL implementation for the Sega Dreamcast. The program displays a spinning swirly thing in the background on top of which it shows 1 of 5 textured objects. There is also music on this demo. Control pad buttons A and B cycle through the objects. Each object spins in the centre of the screen when it has been selected. I created the objects using my own 2d profile editor and volume sweep utilities - see profile editor.jpg

Psychedelic voxel demo
Last Update: 17-Sep-2002
By:
CyRUS
Info: This is based upon the 6 degrees of freedom Voxel Landscape engine by Andrey Serba (http://immerse.km.ru). Most voxel renderers only allow for 4 degrees of freedom, and were initially software rendered. This however utilizises KallistiGL for Hardware rendering of the raycasts used to draw the landscape, and produces decent framerates on the dreamcast due to extensive use of the sh4 fpu. Hopefully proper mipmap texturing can be added, and some more fruitful fun can be made with this. If anyone wants the source to have a play with or to possibly use in a game/demo then just email since I mainly was just interested in seeing how this kind of engine would run performance-wise. Note this has only been released in unscrambled binary form, and is not really worth a cdr, but if someone wants to make a dj/nrg image, then feel free to submit one. In this release you can basically roam/fly around a virtual (psychedelic-coloured) landscape or set the computer to 'auto-pilot' mode.
Controls:
  • Analog Stick - rotation
  • Right Trigger - Speed up
  • Left Trigger - Slow Down
  • Button A - Decrease altitude
  • Button B - Increase altitude
  • Button X - Enable/disable Freefly mode (computer 'auto-pilot')
  • Button Y - Reset speed to zero
  • Dpad-Up - Increase draw distance
  • Dpad-Down - Decrease draw distance
  • Start - Exit

Info: Possibly the first console 4k demo (definitely the first dreamcast one). It displays a neat 3d landscape with some background music, which is all very impressive for < 4k!

    EBDemo
    Released: 26-Feb-2001
    By:
    Pepsis
Info: A fairly simple demo that moves an image around the screen (either bounces it off the sides or moves based on D-pad input). Why the image is the Electronics Boutique logo, I have no idea! Pepsis must have been doing something for a local EB or something. In any case, just a simple demo -- sourcecode is included. This version fixes the missing startup image from the original release.

    By: HAUJOBB
Info: A demo that took first place in the console category at Mekka & Symposium 2001. Intended for PAL DCs only, but will play on NTSC (both US and JP) machines with some scenes missing. Note that the images are almost 30MB -- just so you know before you download.
